In response to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases and with the higher transmissibility of the Omicron variant, the City of Mississauga has made the decision to cancel the organized events for New Years Eve on Celebration Square, including fireworks.
“This was a really tough decision to make but absolutely necessary to keep our residents safe,” said Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services. “When we made the decision to host New Years Eve, the situation with COVID-19 was much more stable. Typically, New Years Eve events at Celebration Square have drawn very large crowds. With the current situation of COVID-19 cases, now is not the time to be gathering in massive groups.”
On New Years Eve, the skating rink at Celebration Square will be open until 11 p.m. and food trucks will be operating on-site. Anyone on the Square after 11 p.m. is encouraged to head home to watch a virtual countdown and ring in the New Year safely. No reservations are required for the skating rink at this time but city staff are closely monitoring capacity.
