May 4 marks International Firefighter Day (IFFD), a day to honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities are as safe as possible. IFFD is also a date to remember those who have lost their life in the line of duty or an occupational illness.
“I am in awe of the amazing work our firefighters do every single day of the year. And over the course of the pandemic, our firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty, helping to administer vaccines and support the city in its fight against COVID19,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Today, I had the opportunity to visit Station 101 to personally express my gratitude to our firefighters who regularly put themselves at risk to keep all of Mississauga safe.”
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services is comprised of almost 750 fire professionals that responded to over 27,000 emergency calls in 2021.
“I want to personally thank each and every member of the Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services team who goes above and beyond to protect the community,” said Mississauga Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi. “In the last year, there have been many tragic fires, not only in Mississauga but in the surrounding area. These fires remind us how important public education is, and why all our divisions – fire prevention, operations, communications, training, public education and fire service personnel – continue to work together to reduce fires and save lives.”
To honour International Firefighter Day the City of Mississauga will light the clock tower red at Celebration Square.
